Breastfeeding can be a daunting journey for the new mother. Even more so when the books and television images of tribal women seem to take to it so easily! So when my little boy came along, I felt caught out and very unsure about whether baby was getting enough and whether I was producing enough to nourish him. These constant fears can really discourage a mother and i hindsight I can understand how easy it is for formula companies to prey on such easy targets - vulnerable and hormone-ridden as we are!
The mothers at Baby Paradise as well as the kind nurses at General Hospital were integral in getting my breastfeeding relationship with my son going. Everyone needs someone to tell them "You're doing great! Keep going!" and thats exactly what this great group of ladies were there for.
They encouraged me to keep going and they gave me the understanding I was lacking with the mountain of questions I had. They were patient and forthcoming and I think every community should have a similar service at hand to answer questions in our moments of feeling hopeless and loss. Today I have such a fulfilling relationship breastfeeding my son. It is wonderful and I would encourage all young mums to PERSEVERE! You can do it!
