A day of training at Penang Medical College - Keeping Birth Normal

This course is aimed  to provide healthcare nurses with the skills needed to support mothers and their babies to breastfeed optimally. It includes skin to skin contact and many practical guidelines.  It was my pleasure to be able to attend the training and pick up all valuable knowledge and skills.

Have you ever thought of moving freely while in the labour room ? To me, of course not. I was taught to remain in the bed till the baby is out. However, in this course, we actually encourage the mothers to move freely in the labour room. The mother can sit, walk, stand or even knee squatting. I Google the WHO websites and found that indeed it was the a GOOD practices in normal labour.

Practices which are good in normal labour
  • having a female companion with the woman who offers support, encouragement and comfort during labour and delivery
  • respecting the woman's light to privacy and dignity
  • Offering drinks and light refreshment durinng labour
  • giving women as much information and explanation as they want
  • encouraging freedom of movement
  • letting the woman choose her own position for birth
  • ensuring the bab is kept warm
  • encouraging skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby at birth
  • enabling breastfeeding to begin within one hour of birth.

Food and drink is allowed during the labour. I wish I had my refreshment during my birth experience. Well, is too late for me. I uploaded  some pictures about the birthing positions.

Mothers, be creative in your coming birthing experiences ...
