The objective of breast milk storage is to preserve its nutritional value and qualities. Washing your hand before expressing milk is a good practice. When freezing or refrigerating expressed breast milk it is best to store in BPA free containers , glass containers or milk bags designed for breast milk storage.
Expressed breast milk may be stored:
· At room temperature for up to 6 hours ( air con )
· In a refrigerator for up to 3 days
· In a freezer for up to 3 months
· In a deep freezer for up to 6 months
LLLI guidelines
1. At room temperature (66-78°F, 19-26°C) for 4 hours is ideal, up to 6 hours is acceptable
2. In a refrigerator (<39°f,>in the back> of the refrigerator or freezer to ensure it stays cool. Put a separate container if possible rather than mixing with meats/fish.
2. Refrigeration is the preferred method of storing breastmilk because it preserves the natural immunity factors compare with freezing.
3. Very important to label the date and be sure to use the oldest stored breast milk. Heating and thawing your milk can be done by simply holding the bottle under warm running water. Frozen milk may also be thawed in the refrigerator over night. You should not heat the breast milk in a microwave or bring it to a boiling point.
