External stress caused by streesful working environment and high work responsibility may contibute lower milk supply.
ReplyDeleteToo busy at work until milk express session been missed out! Apart been a busy working mother, expressing to ensure exclusively pump, have a premie or multiples, relactate, or induce lactation to make more milk. ..//warm regards, Sherine
ReplyDeleteToo much worries of not having enough of milk will causes mental tension causing milk supply low. Also, feeding wrongly causes sore nipples can affect the BF mood on the mother. Most importantly, family's support is very important. Without their support, BF can be discouraging and hence, the mother may feel pressure which may also causes lack of milk supply. Last but not least, nutrition intake on the mother plays a vital role too.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I've been through and managed to overcome. I have experience if: There are not enough pumping sessions, pump wrongly and not emptying them 100%, not enough sleep, stress at work, lack of water and food, sick and under medication, having your cycle period, not happy, worry, and again, STRESS. At DD 10 months, my period came, and my supply dropped that I didn't have to pump at work (i pump once), but during the weekend I kept on feeding her even though I knew she doesn't seems to be enough of it. And by Monday, my milk is back as usual, of course my period diminished by then.
ReplyDeleteBased on baby demand. The more we offer the milk, the higher the supply. Most cases when mother is back at work, she might missed some pumping sessions and brain send signal to 'milk factory' to stop production.
ReplyDeleteOther factors can caused by emotions, health and foods. A wrong choice of contraception pills (combination pill) can be one of the culprit too.
Mindset.
ReplyDeleteJust be confident that you have enough milk for your baby. And be happy! :)
Mood - Be very contented & happy that you are breastfeeding your baby. Just remember sufficient supply or not is out of question. It is YOU ! You make a difference, you make breastfeeding happens and your breast milk is A++ for your little ones!
ReplyDeleteBelow are some of the other causes for low milk supply that I can think of now (might have more):
ReplyDelete1. Started off wrongly - didn't follow the golden rules of successfully breastfeeding.
2. Mixing formula milk - Many new mothers thought they not producing enough for their babies in the early days, so they start mixing formula milk. The more the baby drinks from formula milk, the less the baby latch on to mother's breast. Thus, less stimulation which leads to less milk production.
3. Stress during confinement month - Don't underestimate the power of nannies from confinement centers/confinement ladies/parents/inlaws/relatives. They can really stress you out during your confinement month, which will surely affect your milk supply.
4. Stress from work.
5. Tired - too tired from work also might cause one to reduce milk supply.
6. Negative mindset - Often many mothers doubt themselves that they can produce enough milk for their babies. This is very important. Each time when you feed your baby, think of a waterfall of milk pouring out. :) And brain wash yourself everyday that you'll have more than enough milk for your baby.
7. Lack of skin-to-skin contact with baby.
8. Escape midnight feeding. Our body produces most milk in the midnight.
9. Hectic workload - can't pump frequently, drag too long to pump. :(
10. Diet - drink not enough fluid, or took foods that might reduce milk.
11. Lack of direct feeding, thus lack of stimulation. No such pump that is better than baby's mouth. When you feed your baby, you're not only feeding him/her but the love, the bonding, the nurturing with your baby. Not like pumping, a non-living machine that sucking you.
Cheers! ^^

DeleteI'm a breast feeding mum for one and half years old son.
ReplyDeleteThankful that he is still willing to have direct feeding.
The main reason causing my milk flow is not enough was my son diet given is different between myself and my nanny.
During weekend I was taking care of him myself, and direct feeding him, if I found my milk flow doesn't enough for him, I will just give him other food like fruit, bread, biscuit, porridge and even rice. But during week day, my nanny always come to me, your breast milk wasn’t enough for 2 meal per day, have to prepare formula milk for him. I do not have extra milk storage for my son, which is truth. I start taking the milk tea and it do increase about 1oz and it start dropping again when my period time is nearer. I always struggling that and have no solution on that, which is bad :(
What kind of milk tea are you taking now? Would you like to share with me your pumping schedule ? how much oz your baby is taking per day ?
DeleteIt's the law of Physics. If you don't take enough liquid, how can you expect to produce enough milk?
ReplyDeleteHi everyone!
ReplyDeleteI breastfed my older daughter till she was 21 months when I was 3 months preggers with my second. I did not continue because I was physically tired by the 4th month.
Now I'm breastfeeding my 15month old girl.
What keeps me going?
I wont be able to do it without determination and perseverance!
I keep pumping because I know it's the best milk for my baby and nothing else will do.
So with determination and perseverance, a mom would:
-overcome feeding problems such as engorgement/cracked nipples/baby biting/blocked milk ducts
-continue to express no matter how difficult/tiring it is eg in the toilet/store room/car
-eat & drink well to ensure that she has enough nutritious milk
-disregard any criticism againts breastfeeding
-not give in to the temptation of giving formula (and for this, the best is NOT to buy/stock up on any formula "just in case" thus getting rid of the temptation)
It's all a matter of choice. All mothers are given the privilege to nurse their babies. How much do you want to do it?
Congratulations !! I like the words of determination and perseverance. Even if we are in other phase of life, these 2 words will bring us extra miles. Thanks ..you are indeed a blessing to others.

The main reason no enough/low milk supply is because most of the new mommies does not believe that they able to feed their baby. Negative advise from third party and not get fully support from the husband is the main key to many mom stop to go further. Yes, water intake and well food to ensure the good quality breast milk but individual confident and never give up is the aforesaid to the success
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, there is a lot of reason no enough/low milk supply. It could be due to food/drink/mindset/healthy/support. I breastfeed my son 25 months and actually my milk just enough and no extra at all. I always complained by my mother in law that I not enough milk and have to mix with FM. But I insist and say no. What can I think of the main reason of my low supply is due to lack of self-confidence. The support from people surrounding is very important. Without that, it is very hard to pass through this period especially for working mother. As a working mother, we have pressure on work meanwhile we have to maintain the milk supply for baby. This type of pressure only working mother can understand. I have to work outside of office so I have to always think of the suitable place for my next pumping session. Sometime I force to pump in the car with nursing cover and attracted people. Due to these, I force to complete the session as soon as possible. It might be the main reason my milk supply become low. However, I tried to direct feed my son whenever I could. I still remember clearly that my milk drop very very low that time is when my son was 18 months. He suddenly don’t wan me direct feed him anymore. He told me that "he is big boy". After that time, my milk supply becomes low and low. I was disappointed and upset. I plan to breastfeed him until 2 years old but he refused it when he was 18 mths. From that time, I fully pump out my milk. Although the milk flow is not like previous, but still enough for him since he take other solid food. Sometime I take milk tea to boost up my milk. I fully pump around 7 mths and when he turns 2, I stopped my breastfeed journey. I hope that I will not have low milk supply problem again for second baby in future.
